Meta begins testing for NFT display with select creators in US

Content creators can now display their NFTs on Facebook. Facebook rebranded as Meta, has shown that NFTs are here to stay, there is no crypto winter for NFTs.

The Era of Digital Collectibles

Just when everyone thought NFTs are losing the market, social media giant, Meta, lit a fire under them. After the successful NFT support on Instagram in May, Meta begins testing for NFT display with select creators in US. The company has started a slow rollout recently. Currently only few selected creators, based in USA are able to post digital collectibles on their profiles under a new tab, labeled digital collectibles.

Meta’s Technical Program manager posted the new NFT PFP feature on his social media posts on 29th June. PFP is an acronym which means ‘Picture for Proof’ or ‘Profile Picture’. According to Mr. Singh’s post, users can now display their NFTs PFP as if they were in a photo gallery. Clicking on them would show all the details about the digital collectible.

Meta has not declared the names of the blockchain supported in the new feature. However, Instagram currently supports NFTs minted on Ethereum and Polygon with Solana and Flow supports in works. Therefore, it is likely the same blockchain supported NFTs, can be displayed in Meta too.

Meta gearing up for the Metaverse

Mark Zuckerberg had big plans for Meta, chiefly being the pioneer in Metaverse and Web 3. Experts are predicting this is the first step towards that future goal. Meta already stated their plans of achieving NFT implementation in all the platforms including Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp too. The roll-out is to make these platforms NFT friendly and to dip the toes into the Web3.

According to Zuckerberg, company is working on more NFT compatibility tests on Instagram so that creators can easily share their collections with their followers.

Currently there would be no fee for posting or sharing a digital collectible. They are also working on 3D NFTs that users can bring to Instagram stories using Meta’s AR platform, Spark AR. They are also planning to rollout new monetization tools including a creator marketplace. The creator marketplace would allow creators opportunities, work recognition and payment for content. It will also allow brands to share new partnership opportunities.

All the works are in process and not available to users just yet. The expansion of this new “NFT Display” feature will take time. Only the future would tell what a full roll-out would look like.
